God bless the experimental writers.
The ones whose work is a little
difficult, built of tinkertoys
and dada, or portmanteau and
Reich. God help them as they
type away, knowing their readers
are few, only those who love to toil
over an intricate boil of language,
who think books are secret codes.
These writers will never see their names
in Publisher’s Weekly. They will
never be on the talk shows. Yet,
every day they disappear into their
rooms atop their mother’s houses,
or their guest houses behind some
lawyer’s estate. Every day they
tack improbable word onto im-
probable word, out of love, children,
out of a desire to emend the world.

Yesterday the usual suspects (Ryan, James, Mike, Kenny) and I went on a walking tour offered by the Lower East Side Tenement Museum. It was phenomenal. Here are just a few morsels I gathered (via my excellent, new notebook purchased in the museum’s fabulous gift shop):

97 Orchard Street was built in 1863 (at the time, 14th Street to Canal Street, if considered a city in its own right, would have been considered one of the largest German cities in the world)
In 1905 there were on average 2,000 people living in every block of the LES
Tenement comes from the Latin, tener “to hold.” Any building that houses 3 or more families who have a kitchen in their living space is technically considered a tenement.
Allen Street was a center for prostitution in 1883.
In 1882 Wall Street was wired for electricity by Thomas Edison.
FDR implemented a welfare program in NYC during his governorship. He would later implement it for the rest of the country.

Take a few moments to check out Taryn Simon. She terms her work “An American Index of the Hidden and Unfamiliar” and through her photography, investigates things that we hide from one another.

This is a photograph of Kenny, a White Tiger at the Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge in Eureka Springs, Ark. In the United States, all living white tigers are the result of selective inbreeding to artificially create the genetic conditions that lead to white fur, blue eyes and a pink nose. Kenny was born in the care of a breeder in Bentonville, Ark., on Feb. 3, 1999. As a result of inbreeding, Kenny is mentally retarded.

She Dreamed of Cows

I knew a woman who washed her hair and bathed
her body and put on the nightgown she’d worn
as a bride and lay down with a .38 in her right hand.
Before she did the thing, she went over her life.
She started at the beginning and recalled everything—
all the shame, sorrow, regret and loss.
This took her a long time into the night
and a long time crying out in rage and grief and disbelief—
until sleep captured her and bore her down.

She dreamed of a green pasture and a green oak tree.
She dreamed of cows. She dreamed she stood
under the tree and the brown and white cows
came slowly up from the pond and stood near her.
Some butted her gently and they licked her bare arms
with their great coarse drooling tongues. Their eyes, wet as
shining water, regarded her. They came closer and began to
press their warm flanks against her, and as they pressed
an almost unendurable joy came over her and
lifted her like a warm wind and she could fly.
She flew over the tree and she flew over the field and
she flew with the cows.

When the woman woke, she rose and went to the mirror.
She looked a long time at her living self.
Then she went down to the kitchen which the sun had made all
yellow, and she made tea. She drank it at the table, slowly,
all the while touching her arms where the cows had licked.
